Seamlessly bridging jazz rock and fusion, this album is mellow, intense, and irresistibly groovy.
Originally released in 1980, its forward-thinking sound still feels fresh and vibrant today.
Led by Jiro Inagaki, Soul Media played a pivotal role in shaping Japan’s jazz rock scene. Memory Lane, recorded in 1980, marked the group’s final release under that name. Inagaki reflected, “We approached this album while anticipating the future of fusion music”—and indeed, the result breaks free from conventional fusion norms.
From the mellow, emotional title track “Memory Lane,” to the energetic, samba-flavored “I Will Give You Samba,” and the sharp, groove-laden “Take My Hand,” the collaboration between Inagaki and longtime partner Norio Maeda shines. The songwriting, arrangements, and performances reach a remarkable level of artistry.
A true masterpiece, its brilliance remains undimmed even decades later.
