Recorded in 1999, this fourth album came from an artist who would ultimately leave behind only five releases before his passing in 2016. Featuring bassist Lyle Atkinson and drummer Leroy Williams—longtime collaborators of Barry Harris—this New York session captures Fukui at his most fully realized as a bebop pianist. Built around classic standards, the repertoire, pacing, and performances all carry a clear sense of purpose and vitality. His firm, weighty touch, supple yet driving swing, and the emotion and lyricism woven into his phrasing bring his musical presence vividly to life. A renewed interpretation of his signature piece “Mellow Dream” stands out as a particularly rewarding moment
