Originally released in 1975 on Japan’s iconic Three Blind Mice label, Orang-Utan by master bassist and cellist Isao Suzuki stands as a landmark in Japanese jazz.
The record features a stellar lineup: saxophonist Kenji Mori channels the spirit of Eric Dolphy with expressive performances on alto sax, bass clarinet, and flute; guitar legend Kazumi Watanabe delivers intricate, soulful solos; bassist Samu Kawakami and drummer Shinji Mori provide a tight, kinetic rhythm section. Vocalist Mari Nakamoto also makes a guest appearance, adding a graceful touch to the standout ballad “Where Are You Going?”, a reinterpretation of Shirley Horn’s classic.
Bookended by high-energy, extended compositions, the album kicks off with the funk-driven “Blue Road” and builds to the centerpiece title track—Orang-Utan—a complex, high-intensity fusion number. Softer, more spacious cuts in the middle allow Watanabe’s guitar to shine with subtle brilliance.
Long a coveted collector’s item, this reissue marks the first time Orang-Utan.
