Reducing this music to the simple tag of “crossover” would miss the point entirely — it’s far too original and charged with energy. Immersed in vibrant, technicolor grooves, the sound is propelled by razor-edged funk while radiating a deep, laid-back warmth.
Keyboardist Hubert Eaves III first made his mark in the 1970s through collaborations with artists such as Gary Bartz, Norman Connors, and Carlos Garnett. Entering the 1980s, his influence widened even further as he became a key producer behind major successes, including the work of D-Train. Recorded in 1976, this album stands as his debut statement.
Rooted in a sharp Black musical sensibility and an acute awareness of its era, the album resists easy classification as “crossover.” Instead, it asserts itself as something strikingly personal and electrifying. Standout tracks include the taut, groove-driven “Call To Awareness,” the brooding and trance-like “Slow Down,” the boundary-breaking “Flead Dancing,” and the luxuriously smooth “Song For Marlene.” Remarkably, this music — created in 1976 — still feels powerful and genuinely contemporary today.
