Largely unrecognized outside Japan during his lifetime, the late ambient music innovator Hiroshi Yoshimura has gained increasing international recognition in recent years.

Renowned for his contributions to sound design and environmental music, Yoshimura undertook numerous commissioned projects following the 1982 release of Music for Nine Post Cards. His work extended to museums, galleries, public installations, television, video art, fashion shows, and even a cosmetics brand. His music has been widely praised, with Crack Magazine ranking Green and Music for Nine Post Cards as the first and seventh most essential Japanese ambient albums, respectively, in 2018. Malcolm Standing of Demo Magazine described Yoshimura as “one of the most influential and prolific figures of Japan’s ambient renaissance,” while NPR’s Tom Moon recognized him as “one of the revered pioneers of Japanese electronic music.”
