For over two decades, Los Angeles’ Steve Ellison—aka Flying Lotus and Captain Murphy—has shaped the sound of 21st-century music. Raised in a musically rich environment with legends like Marilyn McLeod and Alice Coltrane in his family, Ellison’s passions spanned beat-making to anime. By the late 2000s, his fusion of jazz, hip-hop, and futuristic textures had cemented his place in LA’s Low End Theory scene and beyond. His Warp Records albums feature collaborators such as David Lynch and Erykah Badu, and he has produced on iconic releases including Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp a Butterfly.

BIG MAMA captures Ellison in a burst of spontaneous energy. The EP’s seven dynamic tracks flow as a single continuous composition, full of unique rhythms, sounds, and effects—completely free of loops. As Ellison explains: “I wanted it to feel like being shot out of a cannon… explosive, unpredictable energy. Like a computer gone awry. Like a machine that had just lost its mind.”
