Atsuko Nina’s 1983 debut album on Teichiku is a rare city pop and jazz gem. Featuring covers of Western classics—including bossa nova hits like “One Note Samba,” “Ipanema no Musume,” and “Wave,” plus American favorites such as “MR.Bojangles” and “Besame Mucho”—most tracks have Japanese lyrics, with only one in English. Produced by Jun Irie and arranged with Hirotaka Izumi, with contributions from The Square and guitarist Kenji Kitajima, the album blends high-quality city pop and fusion sounds. Highlights include the thrilling high-speed samba of “Man or Boy (Ipanema no Musume),” a track still perfect for today’s club jazz scene. Original liner notes by Kitajima and Izumi are reprinted.
