“Windswept Adan”, Ichiko Aoba’s seventh studio album, unfolds as a multi-layered work: at once a singer-songwriter record, a concept piece, an intimate chamber suite and a contemporary orchestral composition. Drawing on jazz, folk traditions and impressionistic classical textures, it plays like the score to an imagined film—an unfolding narrative, a work of fantasy science fiction told through sound, and a drifting journey across the East China Sea.
The album’s fictional setting is inspired by Japan’s southwestern islands—the Ryukyu Archipelago that stretches between Kyushu and Taiwan. In 2020, Aoba visited these coral islands with photographer Kodai Kobayashi, absorbing their landscapes and atmosphere, and began shaping a story influenced by the images and impressions they gathered there.
