Terror Vision Records proudly presents the Original Motion Picture Score to In the Mouth of Madness, composed and performed by John Carpenter and Jim Lang — available at last for the first time on vinyl and cassette.

Long regarded by fans as one of Carpenter’s most textured and adventurous works, the score for In the Mouth of Madness pushes his sound into darker, more aggressive territory. Departing from the stark minimalism that defined scores such as Halloween, The Fog, Christine, Halloween III, Escape from New York, Big Trouble in Little China, and They Live, this soundtrack embraces a heavier, hard-rock-driven approach layered with ominous, murky synths reminiscent of Prince of Darkness. More than a stylistic shift, it marked a turning point in Carpenter’s musical evolution, influencing later scores like Vampires and Ghosts of Mars and laying the foundation for his eventual solo releases. Bold and relentless, it remains a favorite that listeners continually rediscover.

The film follows John Trent (Sam Neill), an insurance investigator tasked with finding missing horror author Sutter Cane. As Trent’s investigation deepens, he discovers that Cane’s fiction is seeping into reality, erasing the boundary between imagination, belief, and apocalypse. Though initially overlooked upon release, the film — like much of Carpenter’s work — gained cult status over time as audiences came to appreciate its scope and ambition.

For this release, Terror Vision unearthed the original master tapes and revealed an alternate, shorter version of the main theme used in the film’s opening credits, resulting in the definitive edition of this long-requested and essential score.
