Daisuke Honda’s Love Songs receives its first-ever reissue courtesy of First & Last Records, bringing a long-lost gem of Japanese private press music back into the spotlight. Originally released in 1977 in an extremely limited edition of just 200 copies through Kojima Recordings, this deeply personal album has become one of the most elusive and sought-after private press records of its era.

At just 20 years old, Honda left his home in Osaka after high school to travel and write songs, driven not by ambitions of a professional music career but by a simple desire to capture his music on record. The album was recorded in a makeshift studio inside a small room at a local textile factory owned by a friend’s family, with a group of local musicians helping bring his songs to life.

Over the decades, the original pressing gradually disappeared into obscurity. Only a handful of copies featured a black-and-white portrait photograph on the cover, while most were issued in plain white jackets, adding to the album’s mystique and legendary status among collectors.

Musically, Love Songs blends soulful folk, rock, and blues into a melancholic and intimate collection of songs. Honda’s songwriting draws on a rich range of influences, from American artists such as Neil Young, Bob Dylan, and the Allman Brothers to British folk group Heron and Japanese folk pioneers Masato Tomobe and Kenji Endo.

A remarkable rediscovery from Japan’s underground musical history, Love Songs finally returns on vinyl for a new generation of listeners and collectors.
