“The Grandmaster” (2013) is a visually stunning martial arts drama directed and written by Wong Kar-wai, inspired by the life of Wing Chun master Ip Man. A Hong Kong–Chinese co-production, the film premiered in China on January 8, 2013, and opened the 63rd Berlin International Film Festival. It was also featured at the 2013 Hong Kong International Film Festival, with The Weinstein Company later acquiring international distribution rights.
Selected as Hong Kong’s entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the 86th Academy Awards, The Grandmaster made the January shortlist and ultimately earned Oscar nominations for Best Cinematography and Best Costume Design.
While not as widely embraced in the West as other Wong Kar-wai classics, the film received exceptional acclaim in the Chinese-speaking world for its philosophical depth, historical insight, and reinvention of the kung-fu genre—further solidifying Wong’s status as a cinematic “grandmaster.” It won a record-breaking 12 awards at the 33rd Hong Kong Film Awards, the most for any film in the event’s history. Zhang Ziyi’s performance was especially celebrated, garnering 12 Best Actress awards across various ceremonies.
