Spectrum, the 1968 debut album by acclaimed funk-driven drummer Les DeMerle, stands as a cornerstone of the rare groove scene and a sought-after source for hip-hop sampling, notably referenced by rapper O.C.
The record boasts an exceptional lineup of jazz talent. Its horn section features Frank Foster, Lew Tabackin, Ernie Lawrence, and Chris Woods on saxophones, alongside Charles Sullivan and Marvin Stamm on trumpet. The rhythm section is equally impressive, with guitarist Joe Beck and pianist Norman Simmons delivering top-tier performances.
From the high-energy opener “Spectrum” to the deep, infectious groove of “Underground,” a funk-infused take on The Beatles’ “A Day In The Life,” and the light, Brazilian-flavored “Aquarius,” the album highlights DeMerle’s remarkable skill and musical maturity early in his career. This edition comes pressed on limited marble vinyl.
