"Happy Together” (Chinese: 春光乍洩) is Wong Kar-wai’s 1997 romantic drama that explores the raw, turbulent relationship between a couple played by Leslie Cheung and Tony Leung Chiu-wai. Set against the distant landscape of Argentina, the film captures the cyclical longing, heartbreak, and emotional volatility that define their bond.

The English title draws inspiration from The Turtles’ 1967 classic — covered on the soundtrack by Danny Chung — while the Chinese title, previously used for Michelangelo Antonioni’s Blowup, is an idiomatic phrase evoking the sudden exposure of something deeply intimate. Both titles reflect the film’s unguarded emotional core.

Widely regarded as one of the defining works of New Queer Cinema, Happy Together received widespread acclaim and screened at major festivals, including the 1997 Toronto International Film Festival. It was nominated for the Palme d’Or and earned Wong Kar-wai the Best Director Award at the 1997 Cannes Film Festival, solidifying its status as a landmark of queer filmmaking.
