Hot on the heels of Tokyo Bliss and Funk Tide, Tokyo-based DJ Notoya presents Tokyo Pulse, a vibrant selection of funk and modern soul recorded in Tokyo during the 1970s and 80s. Many tracks appear outside Japan for the first time. The album, designed by Manuel Sepulveda (Optigram) and annotated by DJ Notoya, has been freshly mastered in Tokyo by Nippon Columbia and remastered for vinyl by Colorsound in Paris.
Opening with Naomi Chiaki’s nocturnal groove “Yoru E Isogu Hito” (1978), the compilation moves through Yumi Murata’s funkier “Ranhansha,” L-E-V-E-L’s mellow “Bagdad No Atari Nite,” and GAM’s elegant reggae-inflected “Lake In The Forest.” Side two spans late 80s electro-funk with Nami Shimada’s “Mitsumeteirunoni,” the folk-soul classic “Memory” by Bread & Butter, Minoru Koyama’s cinematic “After Image,” Brazilian-tinged funk from Chikara Ueda & The Power Station, and closes with Higurashi’s reflective “Anata Wa Doko Ni Irundesuka.”
Carefully curated by DJ Notoya, Tokyo Pulse captures Tokyo’s rich, evolving musical landscape across funk, soul, folk, reggae, and jazz-inflected pop, offering a snapshot of nearly fifteen years of the city’s vibrant groove scene.
