The artist has repeatedly stressed that this is her most personal material, which is why she decided to title it with her first and second names. She co-wrote every song on the album, with collaborations with artists such as Sia and will.i.am. She also invited her younger sister, Jamie Lynn, with whom she recorded the song "Chillin' With You".

Shortly after the album's release, at the end of 2013, Britney began her four-year residency in Las Vegas with the show "Britney: Piece of Me."
