Formed in Taipei in 2013, Scattered Purgatory (破地獄) operates in a shifting space between drone, ambient, psychedelic folk, and ritualistic kosmiche exploration. Their early releases—Lost Ethnography of the Miscanthus Ocean (2014) and God of Silver Grass (2016)—wove together dense drones, improvised guitar, and immersive textures shaped by Taiwan’s humid atmosphere and urban intensity. Drawing from Krautrock, minimal electronics, and heavy drone traditions, their sound has evolved while remaining deeply tied to Taiwanese identity and landscape.

Arriving after a three-year, pandemic-era hiatus, Post Purgatory reflects a period marked by uncertainty and transformation. Centered around the concept of time—its power to heal or unravel—the album moves fluidly across Taiwanese, traditional Chinese, and English, mirroring the multilingual rhythms of Taipei life. Its lyrics favor poetic imagery over narrative, exploring themes of love, loss, and human fragility, with subtle traces of Hokkien and Mandopop influences alongside hints of trip-hop.

Recorded partly at home and partly in the studio where their journey began, the album balances raw emotion with refined, digitally enhanced production. Contributions from guest musicians—including White Wu on drums, Minyen Hsieh on tenor saxophone, and dotzio’s otherworldly vocals—expand the group’s sonic range, shaping a doom-laden sound infused with electronic textures.

Post Purgatory stands as both a reflection and a renewal—a work that bridges past and present while reaffirming Scattered Purgatory’s singular voice: rooted in Taiwan, globally informed, and boldly forward-looking.
