Originally formed from Kiyoshi Hasegawa’s regular session project, the group established its identity through a deep mastery of Brazilian music, particularly samba and bossa nova. Following Samba Carioca, the ensemble adopted the name Carioca and expanded its musical horizons with this adventurous second album.
While Brazilian rhythms remain at the heart of the record, the band incorporates elements of jazz, pop, and rock, developing a more accessible crossover sound without losing its distinctive Latin character. The result is a sophisticated and vibrant collection that reflects the group’s desire to explore new musical directions.
The album also features an impressive lineup of guest musicians, including legendary drummer Shuichi “Ponta” Murakami, guitarist Kenji Omura, keyboardist Hiroki Inui, trombonist Shigeharu Mukai, saxophonist Jake H. Concepcion, and Bread & Butter on chorus.
Adding to its international flavor, the album includes a stylish cover of a song by acclaimed Brazilian composer and singer Ivan Lins, further highlighting Carioca’s connection to the rich traditions of Brazilian popular music.
Blending samba and bossa nova with jazz, pop, and rock influences, this second album captures Carioca at an exciting stage of their evolution — sophisticated, melodic, rhythmically rich, and full of crossover appeal.
