RA MU’s sole 1988 album returns to the spotlight—finally receiving the acclaim it has long deserved.
In the mid-1980s, at the height of Japan’s idol era, Momoko Kikuchi took a bold turn in her artistic journey. She joined forces with a band powered by elite musicians, including Yoshikazu Matsuura—a virtuoso shaped through his work with fusion supergroup PRISM—and two dynamic African American vocalists. After releasing several singles, the group unveiled what would become their one and only full-length album.
Now reissued with its original obi strip and an eye-catching pink vinyl edition, this long-hidden treasure resurfaces for a new generation.
Among the wave of Japanese ’80s boogie rediscoveries, this album stands out both for its rarity and its superb craftsmanship. Highlights include the digital-funk powerhouse “Shonen ha Tenshi wo Korosu” (A5) and the nocturnal urban boogie “Tokyo Yabanjin” (B2), arranged by Hiroshi Shinkawa. By boldly embracing the then-emerging Black Contemporary (Bla-Con) sound and refining it into a sleek new form of kayokyoku, the album achieved a futuristic polish that still feels fresh today.
Originally released during the transitional shift from vinyl to CD, first press copies became elusive collector’s items. With this reissue, the world has finally caught up to RA MU’s overlooked masterpiece—a rediscovery well worth the wait.
