Recorded just before Masabumi Kikuchi’s departure for the United States, End For The Beginning captures a pivotal moment in the career of one of Japan’s most distinctive jazz pianists. Both a statement of determination and a musical farewell, this remarkable album documents an artist standing on the threshold of a new chapter in his life.

Renowned for his singular artistic vision and international stature, Kikuchi relocated to New York in 1973. Recorded shortly before his move, End For The Beginning preserves a studio live performance presented before an invited audience, capturing the intensity and immediacy of a defining moment in his musical journey.

Having explored electric instruments and unconventional ensembles in his earlier work, Kikuchi returned here to a more traditional jazz configuration, featuring a two-horn frontline backed by a piano trio. The album consists entirely of five original compositions, showcasing his exceptional talent as both a pianist and composer.

The anticipation of departure lends the performances a remarkable sense of urgency, while an underlying feeling of farewell brings emotional depth to the music. Standout pieces such as “Shuuu,” “GinKai,” and “Green Dance” unfold with striking intensity, lyrical sensitivity, and expressive power.

A compelling blend of technical mastery, emotional resonance, and artistic conviction, End For The Beginning stands as one of Masabumi Kikuchi’s defining works, capturing his musical vision at a crucial turning point in his career.
