Captured on June 8, 1977, at the Sapporo jazz club Vidro by Masataka Ito—the producer behind Fukui’s Scenery and Mellow Dream—this session features the classic Ryo Fukui Trio, yet the performance radiates an intensity and freshness that surpasses any studio take, delivering excitement in its purest form.

The 16-minute, blazing rendition of “Mellow Dream” is just the opening. From the driving propulsion of “Speak Low” and the intricate lyricism of “Body & Soul,” to the blistering momentum of “Love For Sale,” the profound weight of “Mr. P.C.,” and the fragile clarity of “My Foolish Heart,” every track bursts with feverish brilliance. It was this very recording—partially reviewed at Trio Records headquarters—that ultimately inspired the production of Fukui’s second album, Mellow Dream. In every sense, this is an extraordinarily valuable document of his artistry.
